Healthy Behaviors

Healthy Behaviors

Health behaviors are personal actions that can affect health, either positively or negatively. For example, regular exercise can improve health while smoking and other tobacco use can worsen overall health.

Youth Meeting Fitness Recommendations
Children that exercise regularly are less likely to develop risk factors for chronic diseases and are more likely to continue a regular exercise practice throughout their lives. In Napa County and California, about 3 in 10 youth meet the recommended 1 hour of daily physical activity. Socioeconomic, racial/ethnic, and physical environment factors all affect youths' ability to engage in healthy behaviors. Visit KidsData.org and Let's get healthy California for more information.
Youth Fitness by Race and Ethnicity
In Napa County and throughout California, about 20% of students passed the Physical Fitness Test. However, there are differences associated with race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other social drivers of health. More information on this and to look at data for other grades as well as differences by gender, please refer to KidsData.org.

Immunizations for Children
Immunization is one of the most successful, cost-effective, and important protections from serious and potentially fatal infectious diseases. Because vaccines are so successful at preventing severe disease, the World Health Organization has classified vaccine hesitancy as an important public health threat. Vaccine hesitancy has been linked to an increase in vaccine preventable diseases among children and adults. Napa County has consistently had high levels of immunization among kindergarteners. Visit KidsData.org for more information.
Adult Vaccination
The CDC lists 5 important reasons adults should get vaccinated. They are:
1. Vaccines Have Saved Lives for Over 100 Years—But Serious Disease Is Still a Threat; 2. Vaccines Are the Best Way to Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones from Preventable Disease; 3. Vaccines Can Prevent Serious Illness; 4. The Vaccines You Receive Are Safe; 5. Vaccines May Be Required. To understand more on these reasons and overall information on vaccines please refer to CDC.GOV/VACCINES.
